Objective: To observe the effects of Huayukeban decoction on preventing AS by animal experiment, and investigate the mechanisms of it's effect. Methods: 40 healthy male New Zealand rabbits were randomly divided into 4 groups: normal group, model group, contrast group and treat group, and each consist of ten. The model of experimental AS rabbits was established by high cholesterol diet and bovine serum albumin injection. At different time, observe the aortic structure by B-ultrasonography, and test the serum lipid, nitric oxide and endothlin-1 level. Observe pathological changes with light microscope, and immunohistochemistry analysis of ICAM-1 positive percentage was performed. Results: At the end of 8 weeks, AS rabbits'TC,TG,LDL-C,apoB100 and ET-1 are higher than before, but level of HDL-C,apoA1/apoB100 and NO are obviously lower(P<0.05,P<0.01). B-ultrasonography of aortic shows: AS rabbits'IMT of aortic are higher, Vp and Vm are faster(P<0.05,P<0.01). At the end of 16 weeks, TC,TG,LDL-C,apoB100 and ET-1 of treat group are obviously lower than model group, level of HDL-C,apoA1/apoB100 and NO are obviously higher(P<0.05,P<0.01). B-ultrasonography of aortic shows: IMT,Vp and Vm of treat group are all lower than model group(P<0.05). Observition with light microscope shows:the aortic atherosclerosis lesion of treat group are obviously decreased, expression of ICAM-1 of aortic are obviously lower than model group(P<0.05).Conclusion: HuayuKeban Decoction has better antiatherogenic effccts and it's mechanism might associate with lowering expression of ICAM-1 in aortic, preserving endothelial function, modifying the balance of NO and ET-1 and the serum lipid.
