Objective: This study aims to determine the changes in plasma total homocysteine (tHCY) concentration on that occur in patients with essential hypertension and explore the relationship between the level of homocysteine and essentioal hypertention. Methods: All the subjects have no particular living habites, drugs using and deseases that may effect the level of homocysteine in plasma and were divided into 2 groups: 59 with essential hypertension as the observation group and 58 healthy people as the Control group. all the subjects had received coronary angiography in the department of cardiology to make sure their coronary artery is nomal and were taken to check the levels of HCY With fluorescence polarization immuno assay, fasting plasma glucose, blood lipid (including cholesterol, triglyceride, high density lipoprotein and low density lipoprotein), then every index of the two groups was compared. Results: The mean level of plasma HCY in the observation group was significant higher than that in the control group. (P<0.05). Conclusion: There is a significant increased level of plasma HCY in the individuals with essential hypertention and plasma HCY is related to hypertension. The elevated level of HCY is probably one of the causes of hypertension in some individuals.
