Survey On Humanities Courses Set-up In Baccalaureate Nursing Curricula

In recent years, with the aging of world population,changing of the social health needs as well as the medical model,and the reform of medical healthcare system,the professional role of nurses are required to be repositioned. Nurses are not only the ones who provide high-quality nursing with good skills, but also the main force of primary health care and health education, as well as the equal partner in the medical healthcare team. In this context, the training objectives,length,degree have been adjusted and courses establishment,teaching methods,media and organization have been reformed in baccalaureate nursing education of China, which has formed quite scientific and sound training model of nursing undergraduates. However, with the deepening of reform ,we find the study on baccalaureate nursing curriculum is not enough, and most courses are still be molded on traditional medical education curriculum which is biomedical-model based and lays much emphasis on illness and treatment, which little on clients, families and societies,and nursing and prevention, and which are not enough contents of psychology, social, culture and entironment correlation to health and illness.All of these are not consistent with the expanded professional roles and training objectives of nurses. Therefore, building a rational model of humanities courses set-up for nursing undergraduates is the key to ameliorate the nursing humanities education in China and cultivate the new type nursing talents at new century.Objective: After analyzing data of the questionaires for teachers and undergraduate students in nursing schools, and instructors in the affiliated hospital, this research is trying to discover the needs and suggestions about nursing humanities education and humanities coursese set-up,and review and improve knowledge systems of humanity in current baccalaureate nursing education. Associating with the facts of China, to built a rational model of humanities courses design, which both accords with the social demands and the nursing profession development, and matches nurses'personal development demand. At the same time, this research is also trying to set the evidence for ameliorated the humanities courses set-up of baccalaureate nursing curriculum in China.Methods: Fifteen nursing schools in China were selected using stratified clustered random sampling. Using the self-designed questionnaires, they were covered opinions and suggestions about nursing humanities education and humanities coursese set-up, students'attitude to humanities curricula. Taking school as unit, the questionnaires were published and recoved unifiedly. Data were input in SPSS11.5 software and analyzed on it.Results: 1 730 persons were investigated and 714(97.8%) of them responded, among them 671(94.0%) are valid.Among them ,there were 80 valid questionnaires of teachers in nursing schools, 115 valid questionnaires of instructors in the hospitals, and 476 valid questionnaires of undergraduate students.2 Most students were convinced that humanities knowledge was one of the essential culture knowledge,and could enhance students' personality culture;however, they had not realized deeply the influence and effects on professional courses. A majority of students payed less attention to humanities.3 Different groups almost considered it necessary to reform the current humanities education. The monotonous methods and ways of humanities education, insufficient attention paid school, single and poor effective of humanities curricula and students payed less attention to humanities were the main causes of the shortcomings in humanities education. Second classroom, practical activities and so on were popular.4 Different groups had recognized the important of humanities courses in the nursing profession. Mostly respondents believed humanities curricula were in favor of broaden their horizons, cultivating their accomplishment and promoting perfection of the students personality. The requirements of humanities contents were more and more abundant.Decreasing professional teaching hours properly and increasing humanities teaching hours corresponding, at the same time, decreasing compulsory course of humanities appropriately and increasing the proportion of the elective courses of humanities. Professional humanistic experts off campus and teachers who had clinical nursing experience but they didn't belong to nursing school were popular and should be invited.5 In general humanities curricula, there were diffferences of the necessity on whether offering Political theory subjects among three groups; and there were diffferences of course nature about Statistics, Document Retrieval , Social Proprieties, courses of Psychological Healthe Education for college students among them.In the medicine-based humanities curricula, there were diffferences of the necessity on whether offering Medical English, General Introduction of Medicine, Hospital Administration, Medical Law among three groups;and there were diffferences of course nature about Medial Ethics, Medical Phylosophy, Hospital Administration, Evidence-Based Medicine, Medicopsychology among them.In nursing professional humanities curricula, there were diffferences of the necessity on whether offering Nursing Education, Aesthetics Culture of Nurses among three groups;and there were diffferences of course nature about Nursing Education,Nursing Sociology, Nursing Communication Skills, Communicating Skills between Nurses- Patients , Interpersonal Communication among them.Conclusion: 1 Offering humanities curricula for nursing undergratuates had already reached the agreement. 2 Decreasing profession teaching hours properly and increasing humanities teaching hours corresponding, at the same time, decreasing compulsory course of humanities appropriately and increasing the proportion of the elective courses of humanities; student had more freedom to select. 3 Professional humanistic experts off campus and teachers who had clinical nursing experience but they didn't belong to nursing school should be invited. 4 Forming core curriculum in nursing humanities curricula and paying more attention on construction, and building the integrated curriculum structure included core curriculum, activity curriculum, oncealment courses.
