Objectives:To analyze the health-related quality of life(QOF)among adults with Chronic Otitis(COM),and to identify its influential factors. To research the changes of the life quality between preoperative and postoperative. Methods:A cross-sectional analysis of the adults with Chronic Suppurative Otitis in Guang Dong provinsal people'hospital who met the surveyed standard was made, using the Chinese version of Chronic Ear Survey(CCES)and World Health Organization Quality of Life-100(WHOQOL-100)questionnaire.After obtaining consent, the CCES and WHOQOL-100 forms were administered preoperatively and at 6 months and 1 year postoperatively.Scoring of CES and WHOQOL-100 were normalized to a scale from 0 to 100,with 100 being the best score. Demographic and surgical data were obtained from the medical record. The data were analyzed using the SPSS 11.5 statistical package.Reliability analysis(Chronbach's a),Correlation analysis and Factor analysis were used to assess the reliability and validity of the questionnaire. Results:There are tatally 93 COM patients in Guang Dong provisal people'hospital in December 2005 to June 2006.And all of them gave informed consent and were enrolled in a prospective, longitudinal, nonrandomized study.71 patients completed the 6-month surveys, and 51 patients completed the 12-month survey.(1)Results of the WHOQOL-100 surveys from patients with COM were reviewed and compared with normal subjects, there was no statistically significant difference between them.(2)In CCES survy,The QOL of COM patients was significantly worse than that of the healthy populations.CES scores improved significantly at both the 6-and 12-month postoperative surveys and there was a statistically significant increase in CCES scores comparing the 6-and 12-month time points.(3)The influential factors of patients'life quality is hearing, draining ear,the patterns of operation and the COM category. There are no data show that patient's sex, age, cicatricle after operation, and whether they have smoking history or use antibiotics before operation can influence the CCES score.(4) Reliability, validity and responsiveness of the form were preliminarily assured. Conclusions:The QOL of COM patients was significantly worse than that of the healthy populations.CES scores improved significantly at both the 6-and 12-month postoperative surveys and there was a statistically significant increase in CES scores comparing the 6-and 12-month time points. The main influential factors of the quality life for this research group are hearing, draining ear, tinnitus and the COM category. This study is to provide scientific evidence for clinical psychological treatment. It is hoped to arouse the concern of the society and develop some intervention strategies, enabling CSOM patients to face their problems and acknowledge their disease. They can then return to normal life.
