Purpose: The implantation of a multifocal intraocular lens(AMOArray SA40N) or a momofocal intraocular lens after phacoemulsi-fication for cataract extaract and compare the clinical effect of the twointraocular lens (IOL).To evaluate the safety and efficacy of Arraymultifocal intraocular lens. Methods: 39 patients (43 eyes)with age related cataract wereinvolved and randomized divided into two groups in this study. Onegroup20 patients (22 eyes) received multifocal intraocular lens (AMOArray SA-40N) implantation and the other 19 patients (21 eyes) receivedmonofocal intraocular lens after phacoemulsification. Uncorrecteddistance and near visual acuity were observed at 1 week. Uncorrecteddistance and near visual acuity, best corrected distance visual acuity anddistance-corrected near visual acuity, best corrected near visual acuity;depth of focus; contrast sensitivity were observed at 3 months. Theincidence of complications and severity of visual symptoms in themultifocal and monofocal IOL groups were compared. Use aquestionnaire to evaluate the vision related functional status instrument, the using of glasses and the satifaction of the patients. We used the SPSS12.0 statistic software to analyze the data.Results:1. Intraoperative and postoperative complications and adverse eventswere few and required no further surgical intervention.2. Uncorrected distance visual acuity, best corrected distance and near visual acuity. Uncorrect near visual acuities and distance correctednear acuity were better in the multifocal group than in the monofocalgroup(P<0.05).3. At 3 months contrast sensitivity values were lower withmultifocal IOLs at 12cpd and 20cpd, the difference was significant(P<0.05); the difference was not significant at 0.8cpd,1.5cpd,3cpd and6cpd(P>0.05).4. Compared with monofocal intraocular lens, multifocal IOLs itcan provide more wide range of depth of focus(+1.50Ds—3.50D).5. Array momofocal IOL can provide better quality of life forcataract patients.6. Array multifocal IOL can reduce the dependence glasses whenpatients do works at near.7. The increasing of visual symptoms in multifocal IOL group isacepeptable. Conclusions: Pseudophakie eyes with Array multifocal IOL hadbetter near acuity and range of accommodation than eyes with amonofoeal IOL. Slightly lower contrast sensitivity and increasedperception of visual symptoms by subjects with the multifocal IOLappear to be an acceptable. The implantation of Array multifocal IOL is asafe and effective method for the treatment of cataract.
