OBJECTIVE: To observe the effect of Cordceps Sinensis (CS) on the expression of ICAM-1 and VCAM-1 in the kidney of SHR, and to investigate the mechanism of CS.METHODS: 23-week-old Male SHRs were randomly divided into 4 groups: Group S: SHR without any treatment; Group C: SHR treated with Cordceps Sinensis at dose of 4g/kg/d; Group F: SHR treated with Fosinopril at dose of 10mg/Kg/d; Group CF: SHR recieve daily intragastric administration of Cordceps Sinensis at dose of 4g/kg/d and Fosinopril at dose of 10mg/Kg/d. At the same time, 6 male WKY rats were used as normal control. At the end of 8 weeks, all groups were sacrificed, tested renal fibrotic injury, Serum Creatinine(Scr), and 24hr urinary protein count, and the expression of ICAM-1 and VCAM-1 was examed by immunohistochemical technique and RT-PCR.RESULTS:1. Compared with the WKY rats, blood pressure, 24h urinary protein count, Scr, and the expression of ICAM-1,VCAM-1 in the kidnety of SHR all increased significantly.2. Compared with the Group S, blood pressure decreased after treated by Fosinopril rather than Cordceps Sinensis.3. Compared with the Group S, the levels of Scr, 24h urinary protein count, and glomerular lesion were reduced significantly in CS and/or Fosinopril treatment group. At the same time, the expresssion of ICAM-1 and VCAM-1 was significantly decreased in these groups.CONCLUSIONS: Cordceps Sinensis may be play a role in renoprotection and anti-fibrosis in SHR, and it maybe works through reduce the expression of ICAM-1 and VCAM-1.
