Objective: To estimate the effects and safety of "Shuji decoction". And toinvestigate the method of selecting effective Chinese Herbal in treatinglumbar intervertebral discprolapse(LIDP).Methods: From March 2006 to October 2006, according to the diagnosis,incluciveand exclucive standard 100 patients with LIDP were selected and randomlydivided into two roups. In treatment group 50 patients with LIDP were treatedby "Shuji decoction" in the basic treatment of traction,physiotherapy andbed- rest, while in control group the other 50 patients with LIDP were treatedby "Da Huoluo capsule" in the same basic treatment. The Oswestry DisabilityIndex(ODI) and safety of the 2 groups were evaluated at the end of 1,2 and3 week.Results: At the end of 1 week in treatment group 10 cases had excellentresult, 15 cases had good result, 12 cases had fair result and 13 cases had poorresult; while in control group 8 cases had excellent result, 12 cases had goodresult, 15 cases had fair result and 15 cases had poor result. At the end of2 week in treatment group 12 cases had excellent result, 18 cases had goodresult, 11 cases had fair result and 9 cases had poor result; while in controlgroup 9 cases had excellent result, 15 cases had good result, 14 cases had fairresult and 12 cases had poor result. At the end of 3 week in treatment group15 cases had excellent result, 25 cases had good result, 14 cases had fair resultand 6 cases had poor result; while in control group 10 cases had excellentresult, 18 cases had good result, 12 cases had fair result and 10 cases had poorresult. The ODI of treatment group improved more than that of control group, andthe difference was distinct at the end of 3 week(u=2.26, P=0.01).The functionof liver and kidney, and blood, urina routine were no significant change inthe two groups before and after treatment. 1 case had gastrointestinal side effects and no anaphylactic response in the treatment group, while 2 cases hadastrointestinal side effects and no anaphylactic response in the controlgroup. The difference of incidence of side effects was no distinct between thetwo groups(x~2=0.00, P=1.00).Conclusion: "Shuji decoction" is effective and safe in treating LIDP. Themethod that selects effective Chinese Herbal by combining with clinicalexperience,identification and pharmacology may be very good but need furtherresearch.
