Objective:To observe if the diabetic rats suffer from osteoporosis and the therapeutical effect of a complex prescription of TCM Shenxiaokang on DM model rats and discuss the mechanism of action in the treatment of DM, then provide experimental data for clinical practice.Methods:The model of diabetic osteoporosis was made in male Wistar rats , injected with low dose STZ and fed with high calorie feed. Kinds of examination methods were applied, including biochemistry, optical microscopy, electron microscropy, and radiommunoassay technique to observe the effect of Shenxiaokang on indicators such as blood sugar, glycosylated hemoglobin ,insulin, IGF-1 and the structure of pancreas and bones.Results:1. The models of diabetic osteoporosis rats have been cloned successfully.2. Shenxiaokang could lower fastine blood sugar and glycosylated hemoglobin and elevate the level of insulin and IGF-1 significantly.3. Pathological examination of pancreas showed that Shenxiaokang could lessen the damage of STZ to the pancreas and recover the function of islet B-cell in a certain degree.4.The optical microscopy and electron microscropy of bones showed that Shenxiaokang can increase the thickness of bone epiphysis available, can stimulate trabecular and bone collagen regeneration, as well as improve the general condition of osteoporosis. The treatment group rats bone's net-structure was repaired in a certain degree.Conclusions:The results above display that the structure of the diabetic rats bone was destroyed significantly and Shenxiaokang can improve the general condition of osteoporosis. Shenxiaokang can regulate the level of serum IGF-1, may be an important mechanism of preventing diabetic osteoporosis.
