Some bioactivities of the different crude extracts from two kinds of Nostoc commune were studied in the present work. Material 1 grows in the desert of Ningxia province, material 2 grows in Linxia of Gansu province. The aim of this work was to find the natural products of antioxidant and antitumor in order to provide the experimental bases to protect and exploit this prokaryote algae. The antioxidant activities of all the crude extracts from two materials of Nostoc commune were assayed by DPPH, ABTS+ inhibition assays, Fenton reaction and pyrogallol autooxidation assay. The result showed that the crude extracts from the two kinds had strong antioxidant activities, and the EtOAC extract of material 1 had the strongest antioxidant activity against DPPH free radical. The similar phenomenon was observed in the EtOAC extract of material 2 against ABTS+. The antitumor activities of the different crude extracts from two materials of Nostoc commune were measured by MTT in vitro. The results demonstrated that the EtOAC extract of material 1 appeared the highest cytotoxic effects on human cancer cell line A549 and 7721. The IC50 values were about 24.79μg/ml and 51.33μg/ml, respectively. The crude phenolics and flavonoids contents were higher in the EtOAC extract of material 1. They were about 12.06% and 4.57%, respectively. The highest contents of crude phenolics (17.21%) and crude flavonoids (6.75%) were observed in the EtOAC extract and the petroleum ether extract of material 2, respectively. After further purification of EtOAC extract of material 1 by column chromatography, nine fractions were collected. Among them, the fraction 4 showed the best antioxidant activities and antitumor activities, and it contained extremely high crude phenolics and crude flavonoids (21.30% and 70.71%, respectively). These differences in concentrations of key antioxidants between two different Nostoc commune seemed to be responsible for their differences in antioxidant activities.
