In order to examined the cosmetic effects of natural skin care products, the antioxidant activity, moisturizing properties, sun-protection activity and whitening effect of both the water and ethanol extracts of Nostoc commune were evaluated. In addition, the skin care product formulations were designed according to the literature and the National Hygienic Standard for Cosmetics. The physical and chemical properties, antimicrobial activity, stability, bio-safety and cosmetic efficacy of the new products were tested. Our results have established a theoretical basis for developing cosmetic products using N. commune, and provided a new direction for deeply developing and utilizing N.commune resources. The results are as follows:1. Leaching ingredients of four different strains of N. commune were extracted by either the hot water or ethanol. The cosmetic efficacy of these extracts was tested. The results showed that all the four N. commune extracts have moderate activities of antioxidant, moisturizing, sun protecting and whitening. Compared to the water extracts, the cosmetic efficacy of the ethanol extracts is much stronger, suggesting that ethanol may extract more active ingredients. Interestingly, no significant difference of cosmetic efficacy among all strains tested was seen. This may due to the same origin of all samples we used in this study.2. To meet the market request, five different formulas of skin cream, body lotion, toner, exfoliated and non-woven facial masks were designed to suit for different types of skin. In brief, these products were made of basic chemical agents and the active ingredients of N. commune.We have set the proper ratio of all the components to keep both oil and water components stably dispersing.The components were evenly mixed by heating, and continuous stirring. Our results shows that the formulations fully present the antioxidant, moisturizing, whitening and sun protection properties of N. commune.3. We have analyzed the basic physical and chemical properties, antimicrobial activity, stability, bio safety and cosmetic properties. Our results show that the N. commune products are well-distributed paste, easy to spread, fresh for feel, fine and smooth. Moreover, the color rarely changes, and the pH value is 6.57±0.06. Moreover, the products have moderate functions on the antioxidant activity, moisturizing, sun-protection effects, whitening performance, good heat resistance, cold resistance and centrifugal stability. No bio-hazard was detected in these products.
