Objective To investigate the self-efficacy and the clinical communication competence of baccalaureate nursing students (BNS) and to analyze the relationships between the self-efficacy and the clinical communication competence , and to provide theoretical basis for educators to help the BNS' building positive self- efficacy and good clinical communication competence. Methods 200 BNS from grade 2001 to 2004 in the nursing school of Central South University were recruited by using stratified random sampling , A individual Information Sheet, General Self-Efficacy Scale(GSES) drawn up by Ralf Schwarzer, the College Student Interpersonal Association Self-Efficacy Scale drawn up by XIE Jing et al. , the Clinical Communication Competence Scale of the Nursing Students drawn up by YANG Fangyu et al. were used in this survey. Descriptive analysis, completely randomized design analysis of variance, Spearman correlation analysis and multiple linear regression were performed using by the Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) 12.0.Results 1. 200 BNS participated in the survey, and 200 records were obtained. With three participants being excluded because of incomplete information, therefore, 197 BNS in the final study sample, creating a total response rate of 98.50% for recruitment. 2. There was statistically significant difference in the self-efficacy and the clinical communication competence between different grades of BNS. 3. Spearman correlation analysis showed that there were positive correlations between the self-efficacy and individual factors, familial factors and school factors. In the three types of factors, there were five factors can predict the whole variance of the college students' interpersonal association self-efficacy for 39.40%, they were: individual character, individual appearance, father's occupation, the relationships between individual and other schoolmates, and the evaluation of the teachers. 4. Multiple linear regression analysis showed that the interpersonal association self-efficacy and the achievement of clinical skill can predict the whole variance of the clinical communication competence for 25.40%. 5. Spearman correlation analysis showed that there were positive correlations between the general self-efficacy and the clinical communication competence(r=0.336 P=0.000),the interpersonal association efficacy and the clinical communication competence(r=0.479 P=0.000).Conclusion 1. There is a statistically significant difference in the self-efficacy and the clinical communication competence between different grades of BNS. 2. There are five factors that have relatively strong effect on the interpersonal association self-efficacy of BNS, they are: individual character, individual appearance, father's occupation, the relationships between individual and other schoolmates, and the evaluation of the teachers. Meanwhile, there are two factors that have relatively strong effect on the clinical communication competence of BNS, they are: the interpersonal association self-efficacy, and the achievement of clinical skill. 3. The self-efficacy affects the clinical communication competence of BNS, the result suggests that we can set about to build the positive self-efficacy of BNS for their good clinical communication competence.
