ObjectiveTo investigate the ego-state and the clinical communication competence of baccalaureate nursing interns and to analyze the relationships between the ego-state and the clinical communication competence, in order to provide theoretical basis for educators to help the baccalaureate nursing interns building positive ego-state and good clinical communication competence.Methods260baccalaureate nursing interns of grade2012in the nursing school of Beijing University of Chinese Medicine, the Capital University of Medical Sciences, Beijing University Health Science Center, Beijing Union Medical College, Zhongshan University and in Beijing Chaoyang Hospital, The Third Affiliated Hospital of Beijing University, the Sino-Japanese Friendship Hospital, Beijing Tumor Hospital and Aerospace Central Hospital were recruited by using convenience sampling. A Individual Information Sheet, Ego-gram Profile Test revised by Zhou Bucheng, the Clinical Communication Competence Scale of the nursing students drawn up by Yang Fangyu were used in this survey. Descriptive analysis, Independent sample t-test, single factor analysis of variance, Pearson correlation analysis and multiple linear regression were performed using by the Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS)17.0.Results1. The investigated undergraduate students’ general ego-state characteristics is relatively high NP (which mean sore is15.18±3.14), followed by value of A (the mean score is12.99±2.90) and relatively low value of FC (the mean score is9.80±2.96)2. There was statistically significant difference in the ego-state between different gender, rural and urban family, only children and not only children, class cadre and not class cadre of baccalaureate nursing interns, the relationship with classmates and the relationship with clinical teachers (P<0.05).3. The average score of the investigated undergraduate students’clinical communication competence is69.53±7.88. It lays in the low level. The highest score is "keen to listen", the second for "the building of a harmonious relationship", the lowest scored for" the common participation "and "validation feelings"4. Ego-state and clinical communication competence were closely related. NP, A and FC were positively associated with clinical communication competence, while AC was negatively associated. The correlation between NP, A and clinical communication competence is the most significant (P<0.05).5. Multiple linear regression analysis showed that NP and A can predict the whole variance of the clinical communication competence for35.4%.ConclusionsThe dominant ego-state of baccalaureate nursing interns was Nurturing Parents ego-state, followed by Adult ego-state, while the most weak ego state was Free Child ego-state. The ego state characteristics of baccalaureate nursing interns were different between different gender, rural and urban family, only children and not only children, class cadre and not class cadre, the relationship with classmates and the relationship with clinical teachers. The overall level of baccalaureate nursing interns’clinical communication competence was not high. The ability to keen to listen was relatively strong, followed by the building of a harmonious relation, the ability to participate jointly and validation of feeling were the most weak. Baccalaureate nursing interns’ego-state and clinical communication competence are closely related. The higher the Nurturing Parents ego-state, Adult ego-state and Free child ego-state, the stronger the clinical communication competence; The higher the Adapted Child ego-state, the weaker the clinical communication competence. Nurturing Parents and Adult ego-state have a significant influence for clinical communication competence. Nurturing Parents ego-state and Adult ego-state are two positive ego-states to predict good clinical communication competence. The ego-state affects the clinical communication competence of baccalaureate nursing interns, the result suggests that we can set about to adjust the ego-state of baccalaureate nursing interns for their good clinical communication competence.
