Objective:The investigation was made to compare the result of a four-strand semitendinosus tendon autograft versus LARS artificial ligament for anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction by arthroscopy in chronic complete anterior cruciate ligament rupture;and to study the effect of the LARS artificial ligament.Method : From 2002.7 to 2005.4,42 patients underwent anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction by arthroscopy for chronic complete anterior cruciate ligament rupture were reviewed and followed up for 18-43 months. The grafts were four-strand semitendinosus tendon autograft or LARS artificial ligament. All operations were carried out by one doctor. The two groups were comparable before operation. When followed up,the patients were evaluated in terms of the range of motion, stability, the functional status in daily activitis.Result:The stability of the knee in the two groups were identical;the capability of movemont in LARS group was higher than semitendinosus tendon, but there is no significant difference. Before operation, the Lysholm score in LARS groups was 36 ~62(mean 50.2),which was 38~74(mean 50.7) in semitendinosus tendon;while after operation it was 78-94(mean 88.9)in LARS group and 78~93(87.8)in semitendinosus tendon group. Conclusion : In a chronic anterior cruciate ligament rupture, the clinical result of reconstruction with a four-strand semitendinosus tendon or LARS artificial ligament by arthroscopy were satisfactory without significant difference between the two grafts.
