Objective: To search for pharmacognosy, chemical constituents and content of rutin of Xinjiang herbs of Ocimum bacilicum L,. Methods : pharmacognosy of this herb identified by microscope. Compounds were extracted by back streaming method, isolated by means of column chromato-graphy over normal phase silica gel and Sephadex LH-20, recrystallization. Structures were identified by spectroscopic method including 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR and chemical method. Determined content of rutin by HPLC. Results: This herb has glandular hair, corolla is purple, do not have the crystal of calcium oxalate, the hair different from other Ocimum. There are four chemical constituents isolated from chloroform solvation of ethanol extraction( 3 -sitosterol; daucosterol; stigmasterol; stigmasterol-3- β -D-glucoside)and two kind of constituents from n-butanol solvation of ethanol extraction(rutin; quercetin-3- β -D-glucoside). Recovery of rutin was 94,9%, RSD=0.6%(n=9). Conclusions: Ocimum bacilicum L. is the variety of Ocimum. These six compounds are obtained for the first time in Ocimum bacilicum L. of Xinjiang. The contents of rutin is 25.01μg/g.
