Objective: To measure carotid arterial intima-media thickness(IMT) and mRNA expression of PPARγ, IL-6, TNFa in peripheral blood monocytes in patients with essential hypertension, in order to explore the relationship between thickened carotid IMT and inflammation and to probe into the potential mechanism of inflammatory regulation further.Methods: A total of 60 patients with essential hypertension were recruited from out-patient department of Sichuan University West China Hospital from May 2005 to January 2006. All patients performed the laboratory examinations such as blood glucose and lipid, tests of function of liver and kidney, blood routine. Left and right carotid IMT were measured by high resolution ultrasound. Carotid IMT ≥ 0.9mm at least one side was defined thickened IMT, and thus all patients were assigned to normal IMT group and thickened group according to whether they had thickened carotid...
