Juglans Mandshurica Maxim., a plant widely distuributed in the north of China, which belongs to Juglandaceae family. The whole plant can be used for medicine. Cortex Juglandis Mandshuricae, the bark of this plant, possesses the function of "heat-clearing and detoxicating, to stop the dysentery and improving eyesight". In the modern research, it is available in curing cancer and eliminating inflammation. On the basis of the summary of their chemistry and pharmacology, we have taken a further study in chemical consituents of Cortex Juglandis Mandshuricae. From the H2O extract of the Cortex Juglandis Mandshuricae, by solvent extraction, repeated column chromatography and recrystallization,18 constituents were isolated. On the basis of physico-chemical properties and spectroscopic analysis, 16 compounds were identified as 8-hydroxy-9,10-anthraquinone-1-carboxylic acid (1), regiolone (2), 4,5,8-trihydroxy-α-tetralone-5-O-β-D-glucopyranoside (3), 4,5,8-trihydroxy-α-tetralone-5-O-β-D- (6'-O-galloyl) glucopyranoside (4), 1- (4'-hydroxyphenyl ) -7- (3"-methoxy-4"-hydroxyphenyl ) hepta-3-ol (5), 4-hydroxy-2,6-dimethoxyphenol-1-O-β-D-glucopyranoside (6), 4-hydroxy-2,6-dimethoxyphenol-1-O-β-D- (6'-O-galloyl) glucopyranoside (7), vanillic acid-4- O-P-D- (6'-O-galloyl) glucopyranoside (8), vanillin (9), vanillic acid (10), gallic acid (11), syringic acid (12), kaempferol (13), quercetin (14), myricitrin (15) and quercitrin (16).Among them, compound 1 was a new natural compound;compound 6,7 and 8 were isolated from this genus for the first time; compound 2, 9, 10, 12, 13 and 14 were isolated from this plant for the first time.
