OBJECTIVE By investigating the epidemiological characteristics of drug eruption and summarizing the development of the causative agents, the types of drug eruption of inpatients and the therapeutic experiences of severe drug eruption in our department for five years, the objective of the thesis is to improve prophylaxis, diagnosis and therapy of this disease.METHODS A retrospective study of 164 inpatients diagnosed as drug eruption was done for five years [from January 2000 to October 2005] in the Department of Dermatology, Qilu Hospital, Shandong University. It is illustrated in detail about the age of onset, previous allergic history, drug intake, approximate incubation period, morphology of the eruption, associated mucosal or systemic involvement, therapy, misdia-gnosis and temporal correlation with the drug. Statistical analyses are performed with SPSS13. 0 software.RESULTS 164 patients, 80 males and 84 females, with drug eruption are enrolled with an age range of 6 months to 82 (average 35.15±21. 53) . The largest percentage of total number (21.95%) is from 21 to 30. The main causative drugs include penicillins (32.28%),antifebrile and antalgic (13.39%) ,cephalosporins (10.24%) ,Chinese traditional medicines (9.45%) and antiepileptics (9.45%) . The most common type of drug eruption is morbilliform/scarlaliniform drug eruption (M/S) (63. 28 %), followed by exfoliative dermatitis (ED)(17.19%)and toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN) (14. 06%) .
