Objective: It was to test effectiveness of meta-cognitive therapy for alleviating anxiety in patient with GAD, with validity of Wells'meta-cognitive theory of GAD, and providing evidence for clinical use of meta-cognitive therapy.Methods: 64 GAD inpatients meeting experimental criteria were randomly assigned to two groups, each for 32 cases. The experimental group received medication and meta-cognitive therapy, while the control group received single medication therapy for 8 weeks. HAMA, SAS, GAS, MCQ-30 were administered both at the end of screening day and 8th weeks.Results: 1.The anxious scores in HAMA were decreased significantly in both of groups, but the ratio of decrease scores and the cure rate more significant in experimental group than in control group (P<0.001). 2. At the end of 8th week, the MCQ total scores and the scores of five subscales were significantly decreased in experimental group (P<0.001). In control group, the MCQ total scores, the cognitive confidence, uncontrollability and danger were significantly decreased (P<0.001), but less significant in control group than in experimental group. 3. Before the treatment, there were significantly positive correlation between MCQ total scores, five subscales of MCQ and pre- and post- treatment anxiety level in both of groups (P<0.05). At the end of 8th week, there were significantly positive correlation between MCQ total scores, positive beliefs, uncontrollability and danger, need to control thoughts and pre- and post- treatment anxiety level (P<0.05), but there was not significant correlation between cognitive self-consciousness and pre- and post-treatment anxiety level in experimental group. 4.
