Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate the psychological profiles, the serum sex hormone ,IL-6 and TNF-αlevels in patients with burning mouth syndrome to determine whether psychologic factors, sex hormone and IL-6 , TNF-αare related to burning mouth syndrome .Methods: Twenty-two patients with BMS and twenty healthy controls completed SCL-90,SAS and SDS scales during their initial clinical evaluation session, and the serum IL-6 and TNF-αwere examined by means of ELISA,the serum sex hormone were examined in 19 women patients with BMS and 11 health postmenopausal women by mean of Immunoenzymetric Assay, Follow-up data were statistical analyzed. Results: we studied on 22 patients, of 19 women and 3 men had a mean age of 50.1 years, they had had BMS for a mean duration of 8.4 months, on 20 controls, of 17 women and 3 men had a mean age of 51.2 years, It was revealed that SCL-90,SAS,SDS were significantly higher in patients than those in the controls (p<0.05),the score of depress is highest in SCL-90 (23.36±7.97),the score of SDS(43.45±6.75) is higher than the score of SAS(35.95±8.76), Comparing with controls ,the serum level 0f IL-6 significantly decreased (p<0.05),but the level of TNF-αhad no significantly difference (p>0.05), psychological factors with the serum levels of IL-6,TNF-αhave no dependability, BMS mostly affect postmenopausal women(68.42%), Comparing with controls ,postmenopausal women estrogen blood levels had no significantly difference ( p > 0.05 ) , premenopausal women SCL-90 were higher than postmenopausal women ,in somatization, anxiety and hostile had significantly difference (p<0.05).Conclusion: BMS mostly affect postmenopausal women , psychogenic factors exert a very important role in the development of BMS,depress gave mainly priority, premenopausal women were significantly higher in somatization, anxiety and hostile , the serum level of IL-6 decreased , which probably result in the decrease in nerve defense and reparation ,.the study might provide a new treatment method for BMS.
