Objective:To evaluate the states of self-concept and mental health of children with strabismus, analyze the relationship between them, and provide the scientific basement for the treatment of children with strabismus.Method:Piers-Harris Children's Self-concept Scale(PHCSS)and Symptom Checklist(90)(SCL-90)were used in children inpatients with strabismus diagnosed from July to November 2005 in Shanxi Eye Hospital 152 questionnaires were administered and collected, which included 80 boys and 72 girls.Among them 62 children came from one-child family. Results:The results of PHCSS showed that children with strabismus scored higher than national norm on the total scores. There were significant differences between them.Children from one-child family scored higher than those from multiple-child family on sub-scales of intelligence and body factor. The SCL-90 results showed that there were significant differences between children with strabismus and national norm in all of the SCL-90 factors.Children with strabismus scored higher than national norm in hostility, phobia, psychotics factors and scored lower in other factors. The total score of self-concept was negatively associated with the total score of SCL-90,r=-0.446 (p<0.01).Conclusion:Children with strabismus had a higher level of self-concept and suffered from improper behavior, interpersonal sensitivity, unhappiness disorders easily. In SCL-90,they scored higher than national norm in the phobia, hostility, psychotics factors. With the increasing of age,the scores of depression, interpersonal relationship,obsessive-compulsive and paranoid ideation become significantly higher. Children with strabismus were more easily suffered from suspect, hostility and interpersonal sensitivity disorders. The self-concept levels of children with strabismus were significantly associated with their mental health status. We should pay much more attention to the healthy development of their self-concept as well as the treatment of strabismus. This could improve them to have both healthy physical and mental development.
