Objective: To discuss the influence of massage on the metabolism of oxygen free radicals and interleukin in treating nerve root type cervical spondylosis, find the mechanism of action of massage in treating nerve root type cervical spondylosis. Methods: Sixty-four patients with nerve root type cervical spondylosis were randomly divided into massage group(32 cases) and control group(32 cases), and treated respectively by massage and jingfukang-taking. the metabolism of oxygen free radicals(LPO)and interleukin-1β(IL-1β)were detected separately before and after one course of treatment, Compare results between pre-treatment and post-treatment in each group and the results between the two groups with 100 healthy people's blood LPO and IL-1βlevel as the referrence. Results: The clinical symptoms are greatly relieved in both groups (P<0.01); however, the symptoms are more readily alleviated using massage (P<0.05). All of the patients'blood LPO decreased after the treatment, and there is significant difference in either groups (P<0.01).The patients'blood LPO of massage group is lower than control group(P<0.05), The patients'blood IL-1βdecreased after the treatment with significant difference in either groups (P<0.01). Conclusions: The clinical curative effect of massage group is much better than control group. Massage can reduce the blood LPO and IL-1 βlevels, providing evidence to support that massage can improving the free radicals and have anti-inflammatory effect, it is an important functional mechanism of massage in treating nerve root type cervical spondylosis. After the two weeks treatment, the blood LPO level of massage group is much lower than control group (P<0.05), suggest that massage can improving the free radicals more effectively, maybe that is why massage have much better clinical curative effect than control group.
