The family of podophyllotoxin and its derivatives which exhibited significant biological activity is an unique kind of plant in the world, for a long medical history podophyllotoxin and its derivatives have been used to treat various diseases. Dysosma versipellis (Hance.) M. Cheng is one of the most resources of this plant family, as a kind of traditional Chinese folk herb medicine which has a long history. Some ingredients have been isolated and characterized from the root and rhizome of this plant collected in Qinlin Mountain of Shaanxi Province. Their structures were determined by using modern technologies. Additional, the cytotoxic activity about AZT used against AIDS and its fourteen derivatives were studied. At the same time, antioxidant activity research on one new isoflavone isolated from the IRIS dichotoma Pall, was investigated in this paper. Conclusions are provided as following.1. Four compounds isolated from Chloroform extract of the root and rhizome of Dysosma versipellis were separated and identified. They are two flavonoids and two lignans, respectively as: kaempferol, Rutoside, podophyllotoxin-glucopyranoside and podophyllotoxin,2. Cytotoxic activity of fourteen new compounds synthesized on the basis of the structure of AZT was evaluated against Hela and 786-O cell lines. As assessed by the MTT assay, WDM-4, WDM-5, WDM-7, WDM-11 and WDM-13 were relatively higher to suppress cell viability, and WDM-3, WDM-6, WDM-9, WDM-12, WDM-15 exhibited no cytotoxicity.3. One new isoflavone (5,4-dihydroxyl-7-methoxy-isoflavone-6-O-β-D-glucopy-ranoside, IFG) exhibited low pharmacoloical activity. The effect to inhibit tumor cell growth exhibited a concentration-dependent and a time-dependent. It also induced a concentration-dependent antioxidantive activity. The larger the concentration of IFG were, the lower antioxidantive activity exhibited.
