It is important to understand the aspects of living, quality of life, health status, and expenses in health care of elderly people in those countries who are increasingly becoming aged societies. In China, the lifestyle such asunhealthy diet, physical inactivity, tobacco use and stress, and the lifestyle-related diseases have already been the main cause of descent of the quality of life for elderly. Development of elaborate interventions to promote healthsuch as healthy diet and nutrition, prevention of unhealthy lifestyle-relateddiseases has become the focus both to the government and to families. Objectives:1. To investigate the current health status and medical expenditure of the elderly people aged 65 years and over.2. To investigate the impact of a nurse-based healthy intervention on amelioration of lifestyle, improvement of quality of life and reducing the medical cost for health care for elderly people in urban community.3. To explore an effective health intervention program for community elderly people according to our country's condition.Methods:A quasi-experimental design with random sampling (n=241) was adopted. Subjects were divided into the intervention group (n=149) and thecontrol group (n=92). The change of lifestyle> blood pressure^ the level ofcholesterol in blood ^ blood glucose^ exercise function and the monthlymedical cost were observed; Comparison was made between the intervention group and the control group at post-intervention with regard to the tested index. Results:1. 70.5% of the subjects had undergone a medical expense in health care, 77.5% of causes of cost were various kinds of chronic diseases, and 73.95% of the cost went to drug. Baseline survey showed the elderly people have had unhealthy diet, physical inactivity, tobacco use and obesity.2. In the intervention group, the change of the blood pressure > the level ofcholesterol in blood ^ the ratio of high blood glucose were reduced significantly after intervention, and these data also reduced compared with those of the control group (P<0.05 ) . Physical exercise has advanced.3. The people who cut down on salt and meal increased significantly after the intervention.4. The cost for health service of intervention group pre-intervention was less than post-intervention; Compared with control group, the sum of the people who is senior or lettered is decreasing.
