Objective To assess possible causes, clinical symptoms and improvements in treatment for chronic prostatitis in China and to measure the concentration of electrolytes such as potassium, sodium , chloride , calcium in EPS and urine of patients with chronic prostatitis , to analyze the correlation of the electrolytes in different patient groups and its implications.Methods 3000 outpatients with chronic prostatitis aged 20 to 59 years were chosen at random. Anonymous questionnaires were administered which include 29 items .The concentrations of potassium, sodium , chloride , calcium in EPS and urine of 31 controls and 79 patients among them were measured.Results The result showed that 78.2% of the prostatitis patients aged less than 40 years and that the number of the patients decreased with the increase of patient's age. Those who had the symptom of discomfort and pain in the pelvic accounted for 52.3% of the total and urodynia for 23.0%, sexual discomfort for 21.8%, urinary frequency for 65.8%, voiding discomfort for 74.4%.Patients with QOL score of 9-12 accounted for 66.2, with 80% of them aged less than 40 years.The QOL had a positive correlation with NIH-CPSI and. disease course(r=0.670,.P<0.01 ; r=0.084,P<0.01).Those satisfied with treatment accounted for 34.9%. There was no significant difference between the patients and normal controls in electrolytical concentration of potassium, sodium, calcium except chloride (P=0.001).The concentration of chloride in the patients was significantly higher than that in the normal controls.
