Objective: To study the immunohistochemical change of vascular endothelial growth factor and nuclear factor-kB P65 in pituitary adenoma and their roles in the biological behavior of the tumors.Material and methods: Protein expression of VEGF and NFkBP65 were examined by SABC immunohistochemical technique in 12 cases of human pituitary adenoma and in 6cascs of recurrent pituitary adenoma and 6 cases of normal brain pituitary tissue .Then the correlation between the expression and the biological behavior of the tumors was comprehensively analyzed. Results: The normal brain pituitary tissues didnot expresse VEGF and NFkBP65. But all tissues of the pituitary adenoma expressed VEGF and NFkBP65 . The level of these two protein in recurrent pituitary adenoma was considerably higher than that in pituitary adenoma and normal brain pituitary tissues(p< 0.01).All these difference was significant(p<0.01). VEGF and NFkBP65 protein were mainly distributed in tumor cells. Furthermore, VEGF protein could be distributed in endothelial cells of glioblastmas and anaplastic astrocytomas .The expression of VEGF and NFkBp65 was significantly related wi threcurrence (p < 0.01) of pituitary adenoma. Conclusion: Expression of VEGF and NFkBP65 is associated with the maligant progression ,invasion and angiogenesis of human pituitary adenoma and it may play a critical role in the recurrence of pituitary adenoma .
