Objective To investigate factors which affect the success rate in making focal cerebral ischemia.and reperfusion by intraiuminal thread technique in the rabbit and methods to resolve. Methods One handred and three NewZealand white rabbits were randomly divided into two groups: A and B. Both A and B were divided into groups according to different weight of rabbits. Groups of A used same diameter of thread tip and groups of B used different diameter of thread tip correspondingly weight. Compare the successful rate of group A and B in making models of cerebral ischemia. Unsucessful models were observed to find reasons. Results The success rate was lower in group A (49.1 %) than in group B (74.0%). Among fourty-six failed ischemia models there were twenty-six models resulted from over insertion of the thread (56.5%), twenty models resulted from inserting thread not enough (43.5%). Conclusion By choosing appropriate thread according to different weight, the success rate was improved in making ischemia models. Over inserting and insufficient insertion of the thread were common reasons to be failed in making ischemia models.
