Obesity has reached epidemic proportions globally and is a major contributor to the global burden of chronic disease and disability. Increased consumption of more energy-dense, nutrient-poor foods with high levels of sugar and saturated fats, combined with reduced physical activity, have led to the rising obesity rates. In China, obesity is increasing and is more common in urban areas and among women. Figures show that 22.4% of the Chinese population is overweight and 3.01% is obese. As a result, preventing and managing this global crisis has become one of the nation's chief priorities. The clinical research presented here proposes a treatment to the overweight and obese. According to combined theories of Traditional Chinese Medicine and mainstream conventional medicine, we randomly divide the obese or overweight patients into an auricular acupuncture treatment group and an electro-acupuncture controlled group. Each is categorized into one of the 5 classes according to their Chinese medical syndromes. After two courses of treatment, the treatment group had a total effective rate of 90% (p<0.05). The obesity signs improved with statistical significance (p<0.01), having the weight, skin-fold thickness, BMI, WHR all decreased. As for laboratory tests, the TG levels were lowered and HDL-C levels were increased significantly (p<0.05). This finding shows that the treatment can positively affect the blood lipid metabolism in our body, thus, resulting in an overall weight reduction.
