Objective To analyze the distribution of optical wavefront aberrations in the children and the relationship between the high order aberrations and refractive error in children. Methods Using Asclepion Shack-Hartmann aberrometer, 111 children with ages ranging from 8. 05~11.39 years and the means being 8.94 ± 0. 58 years were evaluated ;The each eye with spherical equivalent refractive error was categorized as middle myopia (SE≤- 3.00D), low myopia (-3.00D +1.00D) ;The root mean square(RMS) values of the higher order aberrations in the all eyes from Zernike polynomials were calculated and compaired among these groups. Results Among our subjects, the absolute values of thedefocus (Z20) and astigmatism(Z22) in the horizontal and vertical meridian were higher than that of all kinds higher order aberrations; Total higher order aberrations had no significant effect for different refractive error groups(F=1.645, P= 0.184); Of all type higher order aberratins only the spherical aberration (Z40) had significant effect for different refractive error groups (F=2.791, P= 0. 044), but only the inter-group comparison between the low myope and emmetrope group was statistically significant(P= 0.014).Conclusions From our findings there has no relationship between higher order aberrations and refractive error , and the presence of small difference in spherical aberration might have played a causative role in the development of myopia of the children' s eyes.
