Objective:To investigate the correlations between higher order aberrations and refractive indices (spherical equivalent, axial length, anterior chamber depth and corneal curvature) in children and adolescent with ametropia.Methods:Sixty-eight patients with ametropia (136eyes) were recruited from outpatient clinic randomly. With pupil being dilated using cycloplegic eye drops, wavefront aberrations of both eyes were measured using aberrometer (COAS, recording the date of higher order aberrations over3mm and5mm diameter zones); degrees of refraction was measured using auto refractor; axial length(AL), anterior chamber depth(ACD) and corneal curvature were measured using IOL-Master. SPSS software package17.0were applied to perform the data analysis. Results:Data of aberration (3mm and5mm diameter zones) showed some higher order aberrations (sphere-aberration, coma-aberration and quadrafoil) will increase as pupil diameter larger (the results were analyzed with the Matching T test). In Pearson test, statistics showed that Age and AL. AL and ACD had positive correlations (r=0.603, P<0.000; r=0.454, P<0.000), Age and SE, SE and AL, SE and ACD had negative correlations (r=-0.425, P<0.000; r=-0.716, P<0.000; r=-0.294, P=0.001); over3mm diameter zone, statistics showed that SE and sphere-aberration, AL and trefoil had positive correlations (r=0.382, P<0.000; r=0.238, P=0.005), Age and2nd astigmatis, SE and trefoil, AL and sphere-aberration had negative correlations (r=-0.23, p=0.007; r=-0.182, p=0.034; r=-0.208, p=0.015); while over5mm diameter zone, statistics showed that SE and sphere-aberration, ACD and coma-aberration, ACD and sphere-aberration had positive correlations (r=0.304, P<0.000; r=0.173, P=0.044; r=0.193, p=0.024). But no correlation was observed corneal curvature to Age, SE, AL, ACD, higher order aberrations respectively (P>0.05).Conclusion:In children and adolescent with ametropia, pupil diameter, SE and AL were well correlated with higher order aberrations (sphere-aberration, coma-aberration). Pupil diameter has significant influence in ocular aberrations. Sphere-aberration was increased as SE developed to myopia. Coma-aberration, AL and ACD also have positive correlations.
