Clinic Study of ShenAn Herbal Medicine Therapeutic Effect to 50Schizophrenic Insomnia Cases and Experiment Observation ofSedative-hypnotic Action on Mice Insomnia is one of somnipathies, which is high morbidity. People are not veryclear for mechanism of sleep and insomnia now. Sleep is a higher nervous activity andproceeds voluntarily in CNS. Central nervous theory, body fluid theory and circadianrhythms periodicity theory are the three most important theories about sleep. Insomnia is very universal among schizophrenics. It is a premonitory symptomand recurrent signal for schizophrenia relapse. One of schizophrenic insomniacharacteristics is distinct extension of sleep latent time. Schizophrenic's extensionaltime is 20 minutes more than normal human average time; falling asleep average timeis about 108 minutes. In polysomnogram, schizophrenic slow wave sleep (SWS) andrapid eye movement sleep (REM) are different from normal. SWS decrease isdistinguishing feature for schizophrenics. Although the remedy for insomnia has been improving rapidly for these years,hypnotics commonly used are not satisfied for its side effect. In this respect, Tradiona1Chinese Medicine (TCM) is the preponderant remedy for insomnia. After we have analyzed various modern medicine and TCM literatures aboutinsomnia and observed traditional chinese medical symptoms for long time, wedevelop a new herbal medicine ---ShenAnTang to treat schizophrenic insomnia. Inclinic research, we observe 80 cases. Meanwhile 80 schizophrenics are treated bysulpiride which has less sedative effect, we apply ShenAnTang to treat 50schizophrenic insomnia patients, alprozolam to treat the rest and observe them withEysenck personality questionnaire (EPQ), Pittsburgh sleep qua1ity index (PSQI),Positive and negative syndrome scale for schizophrenia (PANSS) and Treatmentemergent symptoms scale TESS . Compared with the referential data given by Liu Xianchen, the total PSQI andevery component PSQI data of 80 schizophrenic insomniacs and insomniacs are allhigher than normal adults. The data of sleep quality, falling asleep time and sleepefficiency for schizophrenic insomniacs are notable higher than those of insomniacs.The data of sleep somnipathy and day function for schizophrenic insomniacs are lowerthan insomniacs. Divided 80 schizophrenic insomniacs into two groups, according to the data oftotal PSQI ( 10, into lower data group; 10, into higher data group), the factorsinterrelated with the invasion are compared. Under the TCM theory, ShenAnTang has bettercurative effects to the fire-syndrome caused by stagnation of liver-qi, phlegm-firesyndrome, blood stasis to irritability syndrome and deficiency syndrome of qi andblood in the heart and spleen. Compared with alprozolam, ShenAnTang reduces totalPSQI scores P<0.01 , sleep disturbance scores P<0.01 and subjective sleep qualityscores P<0.05 significantly, and equally reduces sleep latency scores. We don't findany side effect about ShenAnTang. In mice experiment study, we divide ICR mice into six groups in order to observemice different spontaneous activity and sleep, blank control group, normal salinecontrol group, alprozolam control group, ZhaoRenAnShen liquid control group, lowdose ShenAnTang group, high dose ShenAnTang group.
