Objectives After measuring the amount of testosterone and insulin;the Morphological Change and the expression of transforming growth factor-pi and the prostatic epithelial cell apoptosis of the prostate of the adolescent diabetes mellitus(DM) rat,we wanted to investigate the effect of diabetes on male rat's affiliated sex organ and it's possible mechanism. Methods Twenty-five adolescent rats were divided into two groups :Fifteen rats for the diabetic group (DM) and ten rats for the control group(C).The diabetes was induced by an intravenous injection of STZ and the controls were injected with vehicle. After six weeks, all the rats were sacrificed. The prostate were harvested and were observed. The expression of transforming growth factor-pi and the prostatic epithelial cell apoptosis were detected by immunohistochemical technique and TdT-mediated dUTP-X nick end labeling(TUNEL) respectively. The Morphological Changes of the prostate were observed by light-microscope and the serum amount of testosterone and insulin were detected by immunoradiation technique. Results The serum testosterone and insulin amount in DM group are lower than the normal(p<0.05) while the apoptosis index(AI) and TGF-pl-positive index are much higher when compared with nomal tissue(p<0.05).There is a relationship between the expression of TGF-pl and the AI.Conclusions DM can cause the regression of the prostate. The changes of hormone and TGF-pl are believed to play roles in the pathogenesis and development of prostate in DM rat by influencing the cell apoptosis .
