Through epidemiologic investigation on 612 cases complicated with hepatic depression syndrome(HDS), the writer got a lot of epidemiologic information and discussed the characteristics of pathogenesis and treatment of HDS.Analysis of etiology: The investigation implied that the causes of HDS included epidemic toxin infected, internal injury by emotions, improper diet, maladjustment of work and rest, chronic illness, being attacked by cold evil and improper treatment, etc. Among all the reasons, epidemic toxin infection(52.61%), internal injury by emotions(40.03%) and improper diet(22.06%) were the most common ones.Pathogenic characteristics: Pathogenic characteristics of HDS are as follows: universality—HDS could occur in many diseases, complexity— HDS often changed into other syndromes, and orientation—HDS ofteninfluenced the functions of the spleen and stomach .Therapeutic principles : The paper discussed three major principles in treating HDS. Firstly, stagnated hepato-qi dispersing treatment was one fundamental principle; secondly, both body and function the of liver should be considered; thirdly, different actions should be taken based on different syndromes.
