Objective: To investigate the expressions of cell apoptosis regulating protein Bcl-2 and Bax in the renal tissues of patients with lupus nephritis (LN) and their role in the pathology alteration of LN. Method: Immunohistochemical staining was used to detect the expressions of Bcl-2, Bax and proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) in renal tissues of 44 cases with active LN. Their relationship with pathology and clinical manifestation were also observed. Results: 1. The number of Bcl-2 and Bax positive glomerular cells were significantly increased and both were positively correlated with the grade of intraglomerular cell proliferation and PCNA positive glomerular cells. 2. The number of Bcl-2 positive interstitial cells in LN was positively correlated with the degree of interstitial infiltration of inflammatory cells. 3.The expression of Bax in the tubule of LN was increased and was positively associated with tubulointerstitial lesions. Conclusions: 1.Abnormal expressions of Bcl-2 and Bax in renal tissues of proliferative LN are correlated with renal pathology alteration. 2. Overexpression of Bcl-2 in renal tissues of LN isassociated with glomerular hypercellularity and interstitial infiltration of inflammatory cells. 3.Expression of Bax in tubular ducts is correlated with tubulointerstitial lesions and it will increase when the tubulointerstial lesions getting severer.
