Objective: Cataract is one of the most wide spread eye diseases causing blindness. The blindness of nearly half of 40,000,000 blind persons were caused by cataract, in which middle-age and old age people was the major part, who lost labor force due to cataract and can not take care of themselves in some serious cases. These years, due to the increased level of cataract surgery and quality of IOL, a better monocular visual acuity can be obtained. As the promotion of living standard, the patients require the recovery of binocular visual function while getting a good monocular visual acuity, in order to elevate living quality. The main purpose of our reseach is to examine the binocular visual function of the patients after senile cataract extraction and IOL implantation by WISTON visual function examing software package, comparing with the normal seniles. To investigate the influence factors of recovering binocular visual function and the sugery time of the cataract of second eye.Method 86 patients were enrolled, including 64 patients who have undertaken cataract surgery ( binocular surgery 21 cases, monocular surgery 43 cases) in Lishui central hospital from January 1996 to April 2002. The other 22 patients were selected randomly from the normal seniles undertaking health checking from June 2001 to December 2002. There were 4 groups: The first group is binocular surgery group, including 21 cases and the average age is 70.38+9.25. The both eyes of these patients were undertaked cataract extraction and IOL implantation, and the corrected visual acuity of both eyes after surgery is 0.5 or better than 0.5; The second group is monocular surgery group, including 20 cases and the average age is 67.25+6.73. The one eye of these patient was undertaked cataract surgery but the other eye not, and corrected visual acuity of both the postoperation and nonoperative eye is 0.5 or better than 0.5; The third group is monocular surgery group, including 23 cases and the average age is 72.26+8.54. The one eye of patient was undertaking cataract surgery. The postoperative corrected visual acuity is 0.5 or better than 0.5. The other eye has senile cataract to some extent with the corrected visual acuity of 0.1-0.4 ; The forth group is the control group, including 22 normal seniles with the average age of 70.27+9.04, whose eyes werenot taken cataract surgeries and the corrected visual acuity of both eye is 0.5 or better than 0.5. The F value of ages among 4 groups by analysis of varianceis 1.34 and P value is higher than 0.05. The patients were taken lit lamp, funduscope, visual acuity, color sense and visual electro-physiology examinations by same opthalmologist and glaucoma, strabismus, fundus disease, visual nerve disease, color blindness and weakness were eliminated. After the patients were taken the optometric examination, they were detected the four dot-lamp test, simultaneous vision, fusional vision and stereoscopic vision. The method of cataract surgery: phacoemulsification and foldable IOL implantation in 48 eyes, and ECCE and IOL implantation in 37 eyes. The determination criterion of stereoscopic vision: <60 s or 60 s means normal stereoscopic vision or central stereoscopic vision; 80-200 s means macular stereoscopic vision; 360-1263 s means peripheral stereoscopic vision; unable to recognize any one of stereoscopic pictures means no stereoscopic vision. The data is analyzed by SPSS 11.0 software package. The following up time of all the patients is longer than 6 months. Result:(1). Visual acuity: The correct visual acuity of first group is 0.83+0.17; the second group is 0.77+0.18; the third group is 0.52+0.34; the forth group is 0.79+0.20. There is no statistical difference between the first, second and forth group by variance analysis (F is 1.45 and P >0.05), but there is significant difference between the third and the first or second or forth group.(2). Diopter: the average myopia diopter of the first group (42 eyes of 21 case) is -1.46D and hyperopia diopter is 0.72D. The range of astigmatism is from 0.25-...
