The Important Effects Of Spleen And Stomach In The Theory Of Constitution

Based on TCM basic theory and used the experience of classical literatures of TCM and modern medical researches,the article was discussed the important effects of the spleen and stomach in the theory of constitution. At first,the author pointed out that the spleen and stomach were material base of the growth and development of the constitution because of their nourishing essential substance for reproduction (an embryonic form of the constitution),producing qi,blood and body fluid (basic materials of the constitution),and supplying normal work of heart,lung and kidney (maintaining elements). All these depended on the spleen in charge of sending up nutritious substances and the stomach being liable to sending digested food downward. Meanwhile,the change of constitution at different development stages of a human being was closely related with the strength or weakness of the spleen and stomach,such as:six climate exopathogens and seven emotions,maladjustment of work and rest were the common pathogens of the deficiency of the spleen and stomach,which could form the constitution of deficiency of qi. The constitution of the deficiency of qi was the basic pathologic constitution,which could develop into phlegm-damp constitution,deficiency-yang constitution and blood stasis constitution,et al. At last,the author stated that by proper diet and exercises,better spirit and emotion,and some decoctions for strengthening the spleen and stomach,the constitution of deficiency of qi can be improved. It was also very important to prevent diseases and restore health and prolong the life.
