Background and purpose:A quarter century has passed since the introduction of cardiac pacemakers for the treatment of patients with complete heart block and Stokes-Adams attack, the focus first was on improving survival. With the introduction of atrial synchronous pacing (DDD) and rate adaptive pacing (VVIR), improvements in central hemodynamics and exercise tolerance when compared to fixed rate ventricular pacing. So prolongation of life is not the sole index of successful treatment. Benefits such as cessation of symptoms and improved quality of life must be expected, too. The World Health Organization definition of health is a state of complete physical menta and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. Awareness has grown regarding the effects of psychological factors involved during treatment. The state is not well. A few study in fremdness found that about 10%-20% patients developed an anxious-depressive status, Adramatic example of attempted suicide in which the patient tried to cut the subcutaneously implanted pacemaker leads is presented and illustrated. There is no study about the psychological condition of pacemaker patients in our county. Our study evaluates the emotional and psychological condition after pacemaker implant in china. There is no doubt that permanent pacing is lifesaving in many patients with bradycardia. While the improvement in maximum exercise performance of physiological pacing modes over VVI pacing is well documented, it should be remembered that few pacemaker recipients perform such exercise in their daily life, and patients' symptoms and quality of life may be the best way to demonstrate the superiority of a pacing modality. The later is especially important in this era of sophisticated pacing devices and the associated factors.Ventricular pacemakers are less expensive, are simpler to implant and monitor, and have a longer service life than dual-chamber pacemakers. However, dual-chamber systems preserve atrioventricular synchromy and may be more physiologic. Using a more expensive device should be objectively and subjectively justifiable and beneficial. Apart from being useful research tools to compare different pacing modalities, measurement of symptoms and QOL are also clinically important. These measures are helpful to physicians and their patients regarding what they can expect from the newer pacing modalities. There are two approaches to measure quality of life : health profiles and disease specific instruments. Health profiles are single instruments to measure different aspects of quality of life. They share a common7scoring system and can be aggregated into a small number of scores or a single score. Health profiles are designed to be used in a variety of conditions. Importantly, they have established reliability and Validity. The disadvantage of health profiles is that they might not focus on the aspects of quality of life of specific interest to the investigator. Such aspects could be provided by specific instruments focusing on the area of primary interest, but they are not comprehensive and sometimes do not have an established reliability and validity. Our study choose SCL-90 and Questionnaire of Kangnail health profiles. Subjects and MethodsDuring the 5-year period, 1996-2001, people had a pacemaker implantation at the First Affiliated Hospital, ZheJiang University college of medicine. The study periods is more than 2 months. We called the people to return to test ,and the questionnaires were completed in a quiet condition. We investigated SCL-90, cardiovascular symptoms of Questionnaire of Kangnai health profile, Coping Style Questionnaire, Social Support Questionnaire, and the character of the people.Data were processed by SPSS 10.0 software. All data were recorded as x + s. Each group data were analyzed by Chi-Square Test, Student's Unpaired T Test, Wilcoxon Rank Sum Test. Results: 1. Clinical characteristicsA total of 112 people had been investigated, average age is 65years old, from 30 to 87; there ar...
