Dental caries is a kind of internal infection disease which caused by cariogenic bacteria of oral cavity. The etiology, in which cariogenic bacteria,high sugar food, host teeth and time are the four main factors of dental caries, is widely accepted in recent years. Host teeth,as one of factors, is important in caries developing. It has been believed that the stability and solidity of enamel mineral have decisive effects on caries process, while the effect of enamel organal on caries remains unknown. It has been proved that Chinese nutgall could restrain caries development. Furthermore, it has been known that Chinese nutgall has following two characteristics : one is to solidify protein; the other is to inhibite activities of proteolytic enzymes. This experiment started with the characteristics of Chinese nutgall to study mechanism of Chinese nutgall preventing caries and to preliminarily oberved enamel organal's functions in caries development.In this experiment, the mechanism of Chinese nutgall was studied in the following several aspects:a) In experimental conditions, artificial bacterial plaque with a variety of cariogenic bacteria and enamel blocks were used to culture and form artifical enamel caries. 38%Ag(NH3)2F and 2% NaF were positive controls, while deionised water was negative control. The functions of the above four-6-groups are compared with each other, according to the content of Ca> P and the general demineralizatal content in the demineralized solution . The result proved that Chinese nutgall could restrained dissolving of Ca> P. It's effect was almost equal to 2%NaF, and 38%Ag(NH3)2F has the best effect among the four groups.b) In the above condition, the proteolytic enzymes inhibitors were added to inhibite the proteolytic enzymes from hydrolyzing the enamel protein. It is observed that the proteolytic enzymes inhibitors can remarkably prevent caries development. The experiment proved that enamel protein might restrain caries process.c) The two groups that Chinese nutgall and deionised water groups were divided into two leveles : the proteolytic enzymes inhibitors were added to test groups and didn't add to control groups. The results of the amount of Ca^ P dissolving and enamel protein hydrolyzing and caries depth showed that the functions of Chinese nutgall and deionised water weren't difference with no proteolytic enzymes inhibitors , but they have significant diference when the proteolytic enzymes inhibitors were added. It proved that the inhibition of Chinese nutgall on caries formation may be relevent to it's effect on enamel organal. All of these revealed the Chinese nutgall's characteristics of solidifying enamel protein and of inhibiting proteolytic enzymes might prevent the caries development.From above research the following conclusions could be reached:1 Chinese nutgall may be effective in inhibiting caries formation.2 The inhibition of Chinese nutgall on caries formation may be relevent to it's characteristics of solidifying enamel protein and inhibiting proteolytic enzymes.3 Enamel organal may have important effects on caries development.
