| The quality of life is the total satisfaction and subjective sensation on one's physiological, psychological, spiritual and society aspects. The quality of life is an important criterion that can scale elderly life pointer. The quality of life, as a health evaluation index, can provide more information of disorders of the elderly in physical, psychological and social aspects. Lots of research has been done in the fields by used different questionnaires while little has been done on the military elderly population. The aim of this research is to study on the present situation and related factors of the quality of life among the military elderly population. To provide reference about medical treatment and health protection service that suited the hygiene tend and protect in our army.Method:The quality of life of the 167 elderly Chineses in Suzhou were measured simultaneously by the medical outcomes study 36-Item Short-Form health survey (SF-36) and the QOL questionnaire for old people that was made by Epidemiology Group of Geriatric Medicine Committee of China. And the validity and reliability were analyzed, subdivided grade range of SF-36 total scores by QOL questionnaire for Chinese old people. Hereby, to measure and evaluate the QOL of the 934 old retired military cadres in Xian. In addition, 554 members of them had been put up a cohort study in their QOL and exposed factors.Results:-3-1. The Chinese Version of SF-36 instrument is of better feasibility, validity and reliability. It can be applied in elderly Chinese people.2.Among 934 military elderly, the good quality of life took up 35.3%; the middling quality of life took up 60.3%; the poor quality of life took up 4.4%. They have different QOL for different armys of services and distinction, especially the physical functioning, mental health, physical limitations and vitality. The study subjects had better physical functioning and vitality than the U.S. norm, but they reported worse physical limitations, bodily pain, general health, emotional limitations, social functioning, and mental health than U.S. norm.3.The factors with significant influential upon elderly's life are cardiopathy, hypertension, stroke, arthritis, rheumatic, emphysema, bronchitis, tumour, prostatitis and diabetes, etc. The quality of life is significantly correlated with their age, the families' concern, the curative effect of themselves evaluated, the self-charge of the medical expense and the health evaluation by himself. In the historical cohort study, the exposure factors, including smoking quantity, the years in smoking , number of years in hypertension , course of disease hypertension and coronary heart disease, were significantly correlated with the quality of life . Smoke quantity and the years in smoking were dose-responsed with the QOL.Conclusions:The elderly people' s health policy for the military elderly should be performed with consideration of ages and kind of army services. The keys points are the prevention and treatment of geronto-chronic disease , improving health service system ( both physical and psychological) and some social economical conditions. So as, they will have a healthy satisfactory life and a better QOL in old age.
