Background and purpose: Since the bacterium Helicobacter pylori(H.pylori) was identified in 1982, it has aroused abmad attention because overwhelming evidence has implicated it as an aetiologic component of a spectrum of gastrointestinal diseases including chronic gastritis, peptic ulcer, mucosa-associated-lymphoid- tissue (MALT) malignant lymphoma, and gastric adenocaitinoma. In addition, an explosion of research has focused on H.pylori as it has become apparent that it may be the most common bacterium of infection. Identification of the influencing factors on H.pylori infection, which remains poorly understood, is a cmcial first step towards discovering the means to interrupt the spread of this infection. On the other hand, it抯 necessaiy to find a usefl?epidemiologic study tools which has high sensitivity and specificity ,and allow screening of large numbers of persons rapidly and at low cost. Materials and methods: A case-control study was carried out and a unifonned questionnaire was administered before gastroscopy examination to patients attending the department of gastroenterology of the first affiliated hospital of Zhejiang university. The questionnaire was carded out by the interviewers who had been tmined systematically. -4- The subjects were interviewed by face to face. H.pylori status were evaluated by pathology to classi1~ patients as cases or controls. The data were proceded with Statistical Package For Social Science(SPSS8.O) in a personal computer. Then the data were analyzed by univariant analysis and non-conditional logistic regression for multivatiant analysis. Among all cases, 85 patients undergone gastroscopy examination and 14c urea breath test(UBT) , the biopsy specimens from gaslroscopy were stained with Warthin-Stany staining(W-S). At the same time, fecal antigen were detected by ELISA. Then the results were analyzed to compare the diagnostic value of fecal antigen detection to staining and UBT examinations. Result: The investigation showed that the determinants of H.pylori infection is different between the patients who hasn抰 been undergone gastroscopy (group 1) and the ones who has been undergone gastroscopy (group 2). Univariant analysis showed that the influencing factors of H.pylori infection in group I are: age, body weight, height, household crowding, colder food, gastric mucosa inflammation, gastric mucosa atrophy, peptic ulcer(P
