Objective: To evaluate the significance of expression of Fas and FasL in colorectal cancer and the relationship between expression of Fas and FasL and its clinopathological features, post-operational chemotherapy and prognosis. Methods: Follow-up was made in colorectal cancer patients of department of general surgery of changzheng hospital who were operated on in 1993, and the results were obtained in 52 cases. We investigated the expression of Fas and FasL by irnmunohistochemical staining in formalin-fixed paraffin embedded specimens of these 52 patients and other 20 formal colorectal tissues. Results: Expression of Fas was down-regulated and expression of FasL was up-regulated in colorectal cancer compared with the formal colorectal tissue (P<0.05). Expression of Fas in colorectal cancer was associated with tumor stage, and expression of FasL with tumor stage, lymph node metastases and inflammatory reaction around tumor (P<0.05), but not with other clinopathological features. Post-operational chemotherapy had a better effect in patients with postive expression of Fas than with negative (P<0.05J), and had no stasistical significance with expression of Fas. Patients with negative expression of FasL had a more favourable prognosis than those with positive (P<0.05). Conclusion: expression Fas and FasL is one of mechanisms of colorectal cancer escaping from body immune function and promoting its growth, invasion and metastases. So, it influence the tumor's prognosis. But,chemotherapy can changed the exPression of Fas and FasL in colorectal cancerand show its effect oftreatmellt.
