Objective To research the influence factors, such as time, visual acuity and age, on retinal nerve fibre layer (RNFL) thickness of LHON, and evaluate the treatment effects of Qimangyihao Formula on LHON.Methods This is a case control study, we use Zeiss Cirrus3D OCT (Optic Disc Cube200×200program) to detect RNFL thickness of peri-disc and each quadrant retina of64LHON patients and88normal person of same age, data will be collected and assorted by patients’age, sex, visual acuity, how long time after diseases onset, etc. We also compare the differences between each group of data and discuss their clinical value. Feather more,28LHON patients were treated by Qimangyihao Formula, a Chinese herb medicine, to detect RNFL thickness before and after teatment.Results RNFL thickness of normal people are differed by their age, of which the18-29age group is the thickest, younger or elder people both have a thicker RNFL thickness. RNFL thickness of patients with a disease time short of3month are thicker than normal people, but patients with a disease time about3-6moth are almost the same (p=0.745) as normal people, while patients with a disease time longer than6month have a much thicker RNFL thickness than normal people while the change of RNFL thickness in each quadrant is not equal. We also find that there is no evidence to connect patient’s visual acuity with RNFL thickness in our research (p=0.58). Feather more, we find visual acuity (LogMAR) of LHON patients improved by treatment of Qimangyihao Formula(p<0.05), and RNFL thickness of them become thinner(p<0.01) as time goes by.Conclusions RNFL thickness of LHON patients can be influenced by many factors, such as age and time, but it’s still lack of evidence to uncover the relationship of RNFL thickness and visual acuity. We also find the visual acuity and RNFL thickness of LOHN can not inproved by Qimangyihao Formula therapy, but we believe that OCT can be used to evaluate the progress of LHON and other clinical features.
