BackgroundIt had been shown in many studies that glaucomatous retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) damage could be observed and measured even in the absence of perimetric abnormalities. Detection of the damage of RNFL is one of the important methods to diagnose glaucoma earlier. It is of great value to evaluate the change of optic nerve head (ONH) and RNFL with ophthalmoscope or other routine examination in clinical practice of glaucoma, but there are obvious shortcomings in ophthalmoscope such as subjectivity, inaccurate measurement, inconvenient data preservation for follow-up, depending on experienced ophthalmologist for precise evaluation, et al. Measurement of retinal nerve with advanced techniques of laser and computer can produce accurate and reproducible results and it is available to detect glaucomatous progression. The normative values of the third-generation machine, StratusOCT (Carl Zeiss Meditec, Dublin, CA), were approved by Food and Drug Administration in 2003. However, because the normative values of RNFLT of Chinese children and teenagers measured by OCT are unavailable up to now and the variable rules of RNFL parameters, especially the rules of the myopic RNFL parameters, are not recognized sufficiently, the specificity of OCT in early diagnosis for glaucoma is reduced by the false positive parameters. Therefore, quantization of the normal RNFL reference data and investigation of the variable rules of RNFL will be benefit for increasing the sensibility and specificity of OCT to diagnose glaucoma earlier.Objectives1. To quantitatively assess the normative reference values of peripapillary RNFLT in Chinese subjects whose ages ranged from 5 to 18 years old with OCT and to analyze the characteristics of the variation of the RNFLT parameters.2. To investigate the relationship between RNFLT and gender, right or left eye, and...
