An expert system of scale insects outdoor ornamental plants in Hebei province, which is based on the long-distance service of network, has been developed in this thesis. This system can provide not only assistant decision-making service but also technology support of identification and management of scale insects in the field for agricultural and forest research institutes and universitys. The problem that high science and technology isn't consistent with practical application has been solved. Moreover, this success of development of the expert system provides a new direction for development of entomology and makes expert system and network apply widely to the biology.First, scale insects of outdoor ornamental plants in Hebei province have been investigated and analyzed statistically. The result shows that almost the outdoor ornamental plants in Hebei province are damaged by scale insects. There are sixty species of six families, which damage outdoor ornamental plants in Hebei province. The families include Diaspididae, Coccidae, Pseudococeidae, Eriococcidae, Kermesidae, and Margarodidae. Herein, Diaspididae, Coccidae and Pseudococeidae cause damage most seriously. Among the ornamental plants shrubs are damaged most seriously, and the second are arbors, while bamboos are damaged most lightly. There are many causes to make scale insect to damage the ornamental plants, such as simplification of plant community, frequent interference from human being, poor management, and environment pollution. Finally, In addition, according to the need of production practice and system, two binomial taxonomic key tables are listed based on the morphological characteristics and host plants with shape characters of fifty-eight scale insects.Then the system is designed and developed. It mainly includes the select of the development tools, the construct of the system knowledge base, the realization of the ratiocination course, the system integration, the system test and elementary application. The expert system is developed on DistDiag, the general platform of remote diagnosis multimedia expert system of agricultural pests, which was designed by china agricultural university. The platform shows the binomial key tables of insect taxonomy as the system knowledge base by the mean of database. The embranchment node search technology of binary tree structure in the computer data structure is used to ratiocinate in order to realize the assistant identification of classification. The construct of system knowledge base mainly includes the acquirement, arrangement, management and entering base of text and picture datum. Then the system subpanel and user manual are done.
