Ten adult healthy dogs were selected as experimental animal models, they respectly received four procedures of intravenous pyelography with contrast medium of 76% Compound Diatrizoate Meglumine. The four procedures included: low volume, rapid infusion technique with abdominal compression; double volume, rapid infusion technique without abdominal compression; low tension, double volume, rapid infusion technique without abdominal compression; large volume, rapid drip infusion technique without abdominal compression. The trial was conducted to evaluate the image quality of renal pelves and ureters in different procedures and the effects on laboratory parameters in different doses of Compound Diatrzoate Meglumine. The results indicated:1.The image quality of renal pelves and ureters of the dogs in the contrast procedure with abdominal compression is the best, and the dosage of contrast medium is minimum; the image quality of three other procedures without abdominal compression was inferior to that of abdominal compression procedure in opacity and contrast;2.Among the three other procedures, the image quality of renal pelves and ureters in the large volume procedure was significantly better than that in the double volume procedures(P<0.05);3.Between the two double volume procedures, the image quality of renal pelves and ureters in low tension procedure was significantly better than that in the regular procedure(P<0.05).4. Parameters of haematology and renal function studied showed no significant differences in any of doses of Compound Diatrzoate Meglumine used.5. In water deprivation groups, urine specific gravity of the dogs increased extremely after the procedures(P < 0.01), urine pH decreased significantly(P < 0.05)and extremely(P < 0.01)after the procedures; in water free group, alterations of urine specific gravity and urine pH of dogs were not significantly(P>0.05).6. The hepatic function of dogs was affected by the contrast medium—Compound Diatrizoate Meglumine. In the double volume procedure, only the activity of ALT in serum increased significantly after contrast procedures(P<0.05); in the large volume procedure, the activity of ALT in serum increased extremely(P<0.01)and the activity of AST and the concentration of DBil in serum increased significantly(P<0.05)after contrast procedures.
