Production and development of apartment of tower building is the inevitable choice while human solve the contradiction between people and land and enhance the efficiency of the urban development in shortage of the land and other scarce resources. Pursuing high-efficiency in special condition is the purpose of high-rise housing. The late 70s of last century, in the context of the shortage of housing and construction land in metropolis, the apartment of tower building emerged.As our country's special socio-economic backgrounds and development process, the development of the apartment of tower building from planned economy to market economy has also experienced many difficulties and frustrations.The main of this paper is focused on apartment of tower building in Beijing over the past 30 years. Examples analyzed and summarized serve as the division, according to different design style and distinguish floor plan features, of this residential towers' development:1970s-the birth,1980s-the explore, also the most difficult period, the 1990s-the stable growing, and finally, after the irrational booming during the first half of the 20th century, the diversification design styles can be categorized into five major stages. After setting up these 5 major evolving framework, this paper, analyzed different factors range from sociology to political, from economy to culture in order to give a sense of how other roles impact the evolution of apartment of tower building, as well as the evolution of technology and related factors. Aiming at giving back a comprehensive systematically history of Beijing apartment of tower buildings over 30 years, this article is trying to propose some principles that should follow in the future.Reviewing history is to re-understand the apartment of tower building which is an indispensable residential type in urban land conservation and enriching the urban landscape under the current social background. Because of its geometry, it should limit the number of units in typical floor and the proportion of width and depth of the typical floor.
