The Study Of Courtyard Landscape Design Based On Regional Culture

Since ancient time, courtyard has held an irreplaceable position in china's tranditional architecture. It has been adapted for verious areas, climates and people's lifestyles. Its development also has made contribution to the abundant chinese history and culture as well as created a well-developed concept of space design. Traditional chinese courtyard interprets chinese people's understanding of living space through its abundant spacial patterns and matural designing devices. It profoundly reflects the cultural characteristics of different regions in China and provides valuable resources for the further development of space design.However, under the rapid development of modern society and the impact of economic globalization,China's traditional space design has been replaced by concentrated modern residential compounds. In China, a country with huge population, new forms of residential buildings effeciently increse people's living space, as well as eases the shortage of land resources. However,the traditional forms of space design with characteristics of local cultures are gradually faded away, which restrains the communications between people and between man and the nature. Because of these phenomena, people start to defend for their ethnical and regional cultural characters. They wish to turn to the nature and to have their own "courtyard" again. Therefore, the urgent question to be solved is:how do we promote the courtyard design with characteristcs of regional culture in a multi-polarized and globlized world.This thesis has made detailed research and study on theories relevant to local culture and courtyard landscape and summarized the relationship between the two. The essay also takes a step further to discuss the innovative approach of the use of regional culture in modern courtyard design through making comparasons between chinese traditional spatial expression in courtyard design and that of other countries. The essay has made comprehensive analysis and discussion of the design language of regional culture and its expression in courtyard design.The anaglysis and discussion begins with traditional courtyard design and targets the repeatativeness and lack of locality in China's current courtyard design industry. The focus of this thesis is that modern courtyard design must be based on regional culture,combined with modern materials and techniques, at the same time inherits and expands traditional regional culture. It stresses even more intensively the point that the most meaningful task for modern courtyard design is to explore a rational thought and approach that can really express the depth of regional culture, not just blindly follow the form and style of traditional courtyard.From the international perspective, we have to understand our traditions, and the sametime base our work on current time. We have to continue to study the landscape design with the characteristics of China's traditional culture. It is the only way for us to go global. It is also the driving force and guarantee of the development and innovation of our landscape design.
