With the rise of the shipbuilding industry, the demand of shipyard to the gantry crane is developed rapidly with the aspect of large-scale, light-duty, high speed, automation and intelligence. It is obvious important for cost savings of the overall machine that how to lighten the weight effectively on condition that ensuring the safety and operating requirements in the process of design. While the design method of the traditional large-tonnage gantry crane exists much shortcomings such as long design cycle, big error, inefficient and unsystematic design, not reflecting the stress distribution of the whole structure, restricting by the designers'experience, complex design details and scheme optimization, it is difficult to design the gantry crane efficiently to meet the customer's needs.Firstly, the background and significance of this research were introduced, and the development and the design method of the gantry crane discussed briefly in the paper; The 300t-112m gantry crane was designed with its basic parameters; The static load, dynamic load, wind load, horizontal side force, collision force and so on were computed, and stability and safty checked; With the typical cases listed, the finite element model was built by the ANSYS software and strength and toughness analysed; Finally, the optimization design of the crane girder was fulfilled with the advanced technology of the ANSYS, and the optimal solution of the cross-section gotten; Based on this, strength and toughness was again analysed again and satisfactory result was gotten; The mass of optimized gantry crane was lighter and cost reduced.Design thought and method in the paper has guiding significance to develop the same type of machine.
