Lanzhou is one of the major cities in the Northwestern China, where the Yellow River is across the center of the city. Its unique geography, located on the world's only Loess Plateau together with the Yellow River flowing across the city, offers great landscape resources for further development. The beautiful waterfront scenery of 20 km long along the both sides of the Yellow River from the west to east attracts both local people and tourists nationwide and worldwide. Landmark landscapes such as the statue of Yellow River Mother, Dragon Park and Water Wheel Park are also very impressive. These beautiful attractions leave great memory for visitors nationally and internationally about this great industrial city of the Northwestern China. This thesis provides a in-depth analysis of Lanzhou waterfront landscape, and further categorizes the landscape based on a large amount of information collected through on-site interviews, observations and investigations. Several bridges across the Yellow River connect the traffic of the both sides of the River; Plants and vegetation along the river banks enrich the beautiful scenery and environment; one-by-one sculptures are one of the pearl inlay. River islands provide comfortable habitat environment for migratory birds, ancient-style architectures further add a strong rhyme for this Golden city. The thesis summarizes the present state of Lanzhou waterfront landscape based on a thorough analysis from viewpoints of visual effects, cultural insight, human behavior, and spatial environment etc. The existing issues of Lanzhou waterfront landscape are also described from the analysis. The strategic suggestions and proposal are further given for resolving these issues. It is hoped that these suggestions would provide useful and helpful ideas for future development of Lanzhou as an ideal "Mountains and Water City".Through a comparative study of the waterfront landscapes of both Wuhan and Lanzhou, the thesis clearly points out the significant gaps between two waterfront landscapes. The architectural design for improving the Lanzhou waterfront landscape is further enhanced from analyzing advantages and disadvantages of Lanzhou waterfront landscape from that of Wuhan.
