The power quality monitoring technology is one of the research focuses of the present electric power system field. It's quite necessary to establish the power quality monitoring system, so that we can get full grasp of status of the power grid with which we can improve the power quality. In this paper, it's briefly described that the six basic power quality indicators: voltage deviation, frequency deviation, unbalanced three-phase voltage and current, voltage fluctuation and flicker, harmonics, temporary overvoltage and transient overvoltage. And their calculation and detection methods are discussed at length. Given the specialty of the power grid, first the development trends and technical characteristics of the power quality monitoring technique is studied, then the method of adopting the SOC as the control chip and Multi-mode Wireless as the communication in the design of the power quality monitoring devices is introduced. And the basic hardware design and software design are completed. It can collect power grid real-time parameters, calculate and analyze power quality indicators, and upload data to the central station through three kinds of wireless communication, including TD-SCDMA, GPRS and McWiLL.
