The walls and buildings form the courtyard space. Fuctioning as a way of passing through, the building evolves into a certain category—the gate. Therefore we can say the three elements that form a courtyard space are the Walls, the Gates and the buildings.The walls and Gates take up lots of space in the courtyards and of essential importance. In the meantime, they cover almost all the grading system, constructural forms and construction methods. Through the research we should have a deeper, wider and further acknowledge. The Chinese Traditional Architecture lies its specialty at the group combination of buildings, besides its unique timber materials using as constructional structure. This paper has fully researched the walls and gates in the imperial courtyards, which range from the palaces, the temples, the altars, the tombs and the various Chinese traditional courtyards in the imperial gardens. Precisely recreate the walls and gates by the fusion of field research, measuring and computer modeling. With the pictures, measuring data and construction files, this paper can form a elaborated firm research outcome. The main achievements include:The main classification of the walls and gates; explain their grading, form, building methods and purposes; form a combination pattern of the walls and gates in the imperial courtyard. Through the use of skechup software, recreated the measured walls and gates, and research on the basic construction methods; get the enlightment of designing the pseudo-classic buildings from a wide view. Through the research of the walls and gates, this paper can record cherished data for the protecttion and development of the Chinese traditional culture, on the other hand, can be a reference data and a lighting tower for modern design hopefully.
